Dark Ambient Stuff |
 |
|
Finally it's done. My new Dark Ambient track called "Terran Salvation". It's a very long and intense track.. it's actually really 'dark', hope you like it
Cybernetica - Terran Salvation (Parasited02) [14:02 min, 160kbps]
planning to release it and more (similar) stuff on CD in small home production at the end of the year. |

Great! This is grand stuff!
It reminds me a bit of what Brian Williams is doing.
What did you use? How did you compose it? _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Thank you.
I used Spectrasonics Atmosphere for it, in my opinion the best choice for ambient and atmosphere. It is quite easy to use und provides some really great sounds and good possibilities to combine them with each other. The arrangement went quite fast, if you want, it was some kind of a stream-of-consciousness composing (did this one in fruity loops, my favorite). |

| Atmospheres is a good word. Reminds me a bit of Leteti's Atmospheres which was featured in the 1968 movie 2001. |

Yes, that's the one... When I first heard that one back in 1968, it made a big impression on me. He is a great composer. I guess I should learn how to spell his name. |

That is facinating. It was probably the greatest publicity a composer could get at the time. I wonder if he had complained about this before the movie's release would Kubrik have gone to another studio composer and said, "write some music that sounds like this." Then we'd be talking about that other composer, wouldn't we? Ligeti would still be a great composer, but would he be famous? |

I hardly think Gyorgy Ligeti came to fame only by the means of Kubrick´s 2001.
he got a fair bit of recognition for the electronic composition Artikulation (1958) and the orchestral work Apparitions (1958-59). I think he wrote Atmosphères in 1961. The organ work Volumina was finished soon after. that one is a great toetapper.. dense stuff..
Hmm.. and he went berserk with contrapuntal ideas in the Requiem (1963..65) and Lux aeterna (1966). All these works are recommended. Hot stuff! Really hot stuff! _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Fame is relative. He may have been well known amoung classical contemporary music fans, but not to the general public. After the movie was released he was much better known. I was teaching a course in electronic music to 7th graders at the Oakland, California public schools in the early 1970s. The kids wanted to be little Ligetis, not Beatles!!! Ligeti was very famous then - very cool. 13 year olds dug his sounds. Stravinski never had it so good.
I think that has carried over to today, but he's slipping back into the personna of being a composer again, poor man. The movie 2001 doesn't seem to have very much audience appeal today, compared to say Forbidden Planet, or The Day the Earth Stood Still. |

| I had heard Kubrick actually approached Roger Waters to do the soundtrack for 2001. But he declined. If you play Pink Floyd's "Echoes" for the entire last segment (where Kubrick used Mozart), it is a fantastic match. There are even alternative words for the song, which was rumored to be originally called Planets, if I'm not mistaken. All hear-say and rumor. But it's even better than playing "Dark Side..." to "The Wizard of Oz" (If you queue up the song on the CD player & pause it, unpause right when the words introducing the last segment of the film appear, similar to unpausing Dark Side on the third Lion's roar for Oz...). |

Writing music to go with old movies, now that’s an interesting idea.
I saw 2001 dozens of times as a kid, my only (slight) disappointment was that W. Carlos had no input at all on the soundtrack. Clockwork Orange soundtrack was/is excellent. |

| I've been slowly working on an electro-industrial soundtrack to "Metropolis" (old silent B&W from the early 1900's). In someways it makes writing easier...you get queues, images to work with, and all your timing is predefined (once you identify transition points). |

Hey.. Metropolis by Fritz Lang
http://www.kino.com/metropolis/
I made a soundtrack fo rthat one too way back. I have tried to make sense of it, but I couldn´t find my video copy and the ones I have tried so far are different. I guess the new 2002 version is closest to the original version.. maybe... dunno.. perhaps an electro-music.com metropolis box set is called for? _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Thank you guys, for the comments so far.
That piece 'atmospheres' was one of the tunes that inspired me when creating my track.
But there are lots of ambient pieces that somehow had an influence on me. In Slaughter Natives, Stahlwerk 9 for example are great ambient artists. The stuff by some forum members, specially Elektro80, was very important to me for learning and understanding the 'rules' of ambient.
@redskull: .. if you're not kidding.. I'm really interested!  |

THX lars. I am not entirely sure it is possible to deduce anything about the rules of ambient music from my stuff.. I hardly think of it as ambient music myself. That said, I am partly raised on "classical" avantgarde so the link to ambient might be there still. I love Ligeti and the lot. Recently I have enjoyed some recording of material by Arvo Pärt. Great stuff.
The two choir works The Beatitudes and Magnificat are well known gems, but you shold check out older stuff like Et Deem too. hey.. i almost forgot Litany. Great piece.
There is a work list at: http://www.musicolog.com/part_works.asp _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

I thought of your 'Scharnhorst' track for example.
I'll check out your recommendations and the link, thanks |

Yeah, this is bloody cool. I'm not familiar enough with this genre to comment on the track technically, but for what it's worth, I think it's wicked.
Loads of mood, loads of atmosphere. Freaky dark movie soundtrack stuff. _________________ This message was brought to you from Beyond The Grave. |
