Martha, I think I've got electro-music.com!
Streaming audio information:

electro-music.com is proud announce that we are providing live audio streaming over the internet to our community. Now it is possible for electro-musicians all over the planet to broadcast live audio of concerts or electro-jams to a global audience. We hope this will greatly enhance the strength of our community and increase our collective audience. The web page for the electro-music.com radio service is http://radio.electro-music.com.

We are using the Shoutcast technology. Shoutcast is usable on Mac, Windows and Linux. On Mac, iTunes will play the streams. On Windows, we suggest Winamp, but you may use iTunes and even Windows Media Player. On Linux, XMMS is suggested.

Whenever possible, we will stream at two rates - one for good fidelity and one to enable people with slower internet connections. Try the server with the highest bit rate first and fall back to the slower one if you are having trouble.

When live events are being streamed be sure to check onto the electro-music.com chat room. Usually, someone at the source will be able to share what is going on.

All you need to originate an internet radio broadcast is a moderately capable PC with a sound card, a broadband internet link (Cable Modem, ADSL, etc), and some free software. It is also possible to originate live music broadcasts from OSX, but you must get some commercial software that costs about $40 US - free eval. See: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/nicecast/ )

If you would like to source a live audio SHOUTcast steam on electro-music.com from your studio or other remote location, these are the steps:

1) Let us know you want to participate. Send a PM to MOSC. Tell us know who you are, something about the music, when you'd like to broadcast, and other details. At some point you will need some promotional "copy' to help promote your broadcast. This would include pictures, descriptions and any links to your website and/or mp3s. If you have CDs for sale, provide a link to those too. This information should be posted as a forum topic on the News -> Concerts and Fesitvals forum.

2) If all is agreeable and appropriate, the we'll give you a couple of URLs and passwords to our test server. This will enable you to experiment with your setup and to practice broadcasting your live streams. When we are comfortable you can get the technology to work, we'll set up an exact time and you'll get different URLs and passwords to access our public servers. We will post announcements on electro-music.com and you can promote the event in other ways as well. This service will be free unless we outgrow our infastructure.

The best time for a stream would be at about 3 PM EST (Eastern USA time) to correspond with mid evening in Europe. Other times are possible, but maybe not as desirable.

During the broadcast, listeners can get together on the electro-music.com chat room. It's possible to interact with the audience this way. We have the option of rebroadcasting these live events as well, so the music will be heard by a larger audience.

Please note, we aren't offering free streaming servers for streaming stations. This is for infrequent single event concerts and such. Also, the type of music must be appropriate.

We'd love to hear any suggestions for improving this new service. Please let us know what you think.

Mahoney and Peck in concert
On-demand streaming audio: Tune In (46 min)

Ambient artists, Mark Mahoney & Michael Peck, decided to promote electronic music in their area. The two live in upper East Tennessee, which is the birthplace of country music. With the local university teaching courses in Bluegrass Music, it seemed an iffy proposition for Mahoney and Peck. The show was entitled "A Night of Electronic Music," on October 14, 2006. It took place in a venue noted for playing Bluegrass and Roots music.

In keeping with the spirit of the electro-music.community, Peck had brought Recompass (Travis Thatcher) to a small Johnson City, TN indy club in 2005. This year Mahoney and Peck brought electro-music members, Ace Paradise and Michael Victor, to Johnson City. Included in the show besides Mahoney and Peck, were three loca (...more...)

Battle of the Bucket Brigade

I have been travelling during the summer, a long way from the metal walls of modular synths. But now I am back with monthly reports from the modular world.

Analogue Systems has during long time sold their RS-310 Reverb/Chorus, with a special multi tap bucket brigade chip capable to create electronic reverb effects.

Doepfer A188
Doepfer is now in the race with no less than six A-188-1 modules, each with a different BBD chip, ranging from 256 steps to 4096 steps. In practice, it means that the delay time is from a dozen milliseconds in the 256 BBD Chip to up to over 200 milliseconds in the 4096 chip. The AS RS-310 is declared to be capable of up to 150 ms delay.

The length of the delay is controlled by the clock frequency. Normally, it is above 10 KHz, and filtered to be inaudible. For short delay times, the clock (...more...)
