Guidance? |
 |
|
Hi there!
I'm pondering participating in the Solstice Concert...
I have never done this kind of thing before. I read the Connection details text some, got myself Butt 0.1.36 that I installed on my old MacBook Air, OSX 10.12.6 Sierra. Could someone help me to configure Butt for the broadcast test, and then the broadcast itself? and give me enlightment?
à priori, Butt asks for Name (is this ajust a name I assign to the setup or must it be something specific?); Address (?); Port (which one do I use?); password (I think i get it).
thanks,

For the port you can pick 8130, 8132, 8134, 8136 or 8138 .. does not really matter now - but for an event you will probably be assigned another one - the password for all those is 'public' without quotes .. the server is electro-music.com |

A couple minutes (or longer) before your scheduled time slot begins, you connect to your assigned shoutcast port.
During the event there are so called stream operators that have access to a page that allows them to switch different ports to the main radio channel.
When the time comes your port will be switched over and you are live on the air.
In the chat it is announced beforehand how much time there is before the switch, there is a message in chat when the switch takes place
and a message once you are actually on the air and we can hear you, as there is a bit of a delay after switching over.
Keep close attention to the chat at this point (if possible) in case something went wrong and you are not actually on the air.
There have been rare occasions were someone played a whole set without anyone actually being able to hear them.
So if there is something wrong we use a message that says [WE CAN NOT HEAR YOU] and will try to get your attention.
note that we run a very strict schedule so if your set takes longer you will be cut off (you can continue streaming and finish your set but it won't be on the main channel)
This does have the drawback that if something goes wrong that's out of your control, like a server malfunction, you might have a shorter slot, or won't be able to play at all.
This is rare but has happened in the past. We do coordinate things in the chat so sometimes last minute schedule changes can be discussed if needed.
If you want to have a copy of your set it is strongly advised to record yourself, BUTT has a feature for that.
I (PHOBoS) will usually run a streamripper during events to have a copy of every set but this is only an mp3 @128kbps and if there are any glitches or drop outs this will end up in those recordings.
It's also possible that I simply forget or something else goes wrong on my end so there is no 100% guarantee.
If you can't record or something went wrong with your recording you can send me a pm (personal message using the inbuild messaging system on the forum) afterwards. _________________ "My perf, it's full of holes!"

Two more questions:
Can I run Firefox beside Butt (for messages)?
Should I disconnect my VoIP in order to assure maximum bandwidth to the transmission? _________________ DJ Abstrait, musique concrète |

Yes, you have to run a browser to use the chat program. It runs in the browser.
As for VoIP, If you can, switch it off during your performance. Of course it depends on the bandwidth of your service. But you don't want to receive any calls while you are playing anyway. _________________ --Howard

yes,
no,
now!
Port* is assigned when the schedule is made which happens over time. I can't seem to edit it right now but I'll give you port 8134,
password for that is: public (as in the word public)
I'll put you at 19:30 GMT, right after schugosonic, if that doesn't work for you just let me know.
Schedule can be viewed in the wiki (at the moment you can easily find it by clicking on the banner at the top of the forum)
It looks a bit deserted at the moment, people do tend to sign up as we get closer to the event.
*you can always test with any of the public ports btw (8130, 8132, 8134, 8136, 8138) _________________ "My perf, it's full of holes!"
