BTW, You guys probably read newspapers.. and the breaking news this last week has been the "burning ice" resources.
More about what it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methane_clathrate

Now there is the a proven method to get the methane out of the ice using C02.

Norwegian article: http://www.dn.no/energi/article2277650.ece

Quote:
Bjørn Kvamme and Arne Graue at the Institute for Physics and technology at the University of Bergen have developed a method for injecting CO2 into hydrates and reversing the process; thereby extracting CH4 by direct exchange.

This basically means that there is a vast "new" resource ready to be exploited.

Great idea!

Ice Fracking! Laughing

Let's bring it on (and keep warm this winter) before it depletes the ozone layer! Very Happy

Not exactly quite ice fracking as that is something that would lead to disaster.
The idea, that is proven to work just fine, is to pump CO2 down into a methane reservoir and the CO2 is then slurped into the clathrate and the methane released proportionally of sorts.

Trivia:
You probably already know of the methane clathrate gun hypothesis?

Right.. well.. cool.. ok.. but I´m sure you can say that about porn movies as well. scratch

The ironic thing about all those visions of a 'sci-fi future', they aren't ever going to exist if we bury our head in the sand and opt for a future that has zero growth! Idea

I embrace the sci-fi future. In fact according to all those wonderful predictions in the 1940's and 50's, I was really hoping that we would have arrived there by now. Unfortunately there seems to be far too much resistance to it from those who are scared of the future.

Now Damien, before you rip my head off, I'd like to say that I'm referring to some people, not all and especially, not just you. Recently I've been coming up against many on the internet who share both misanthropic and malthusian thoughts, and this upsets me greatly. Yes, there are wankers in the world, you can't avoid it, and some people can be incredibly selfish- you can't avoid them either. But that's not everyone. And more importantly, some are selfish purely because they've never been given or shown any proper boundaries (anyone watching the Australian drama "The Slap" by any chance?).
In recent years I think people have been 'overguided' by the state. It's paved the way to a new generation of people who would rather have others do the thinking for them. This is what's really wrong with the world if there is anything wrong at all? imo.

I could bring loads of other things to the table- but I won't- mainly because I've now got to go and pick up the kids from school! Very Happy

There was also a period of 800 years called the "dark" ages that set us back. If not for that, we'd probably be populating other solar systems by now.

You're not in danger of having your head ripped off - not from me! Smile I'm with you all the way on your points here. I really believe that caring for the natural world while advancing science and technology are not mutually exclusive. In fact, I believe they should go hand-in-hand. I don't know if you're familiar with the Nox in Stargate SG-1, but they epitomize my ideal. They're scientifically advanced beyond our imagination, but they are one with their natural world. Very Happy

We were supposed to get robots and flying cars by now, and the vision of the future has been replaced by cars with exhaust that smell like ice cow farts?

FYI, that concept of a dark age is basically a myth.

This.. from the Wikipedia is fairly decent, in need of some editing though.. but overall pretty correct:

Quote:
The "Dark Ages" is a historical periodization emphasizing the cultural and economic deterioration that supposedly occurred in Europe following the decline of the Roman Empire.[1][2] The label employs traditional light-versus-darkness imagery to contrast the "darkness" of the period with earlier and later periods of "light". The period was characterized by a scarcity of historical and other written records for much of the period, rendering it obscure to historians. The term "Dark Age" itself derives from the Latin saeculum obscurum, originally applied by Caesar Baronius in 1602 to a tumultuous period in the 10th and 11th century.[3]
Originally, the term characterized the bulk of the Middle Ages, or roughly the 6th to 13th centuries, as a period of intellectual darkness between the extinguishing of the "light of Rome" after the end of Late Antiquity, and the rise of the Italian Renaissance in the 14th century.[4] This definition is still found in popular usage,[1][2][5] but increased recognition of the accomplishments of the Middle Ages since the 19th century has led to the label being restricted in application. Since the 20th century, it is frequently applied only to the earlier part of the era, the Early Middle Ages (c. 5th–10th century).[6][7] However, many modern scholars who study the era tend to avoid the term altogether for its negative connotations, finding it misleading and inaccurate for any part of the Middle Ages.[8][9][10]
The concept of a Dark Age originated with the Italian scholar Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca) in the 1330s, and was originally intended as a sweeping criticism of the character of Late Latin literature.[4][11] Petrarch regarded the post-Roman centuries as "dark" compared to the light of classical antiquity. Later historians expanded the term to refer to the transitional period between Roman times and the High Middle Ages (c. 11th–13th century), including not only the lack of Latin literature, but also a lack of contemporary written history, general demographic decline, limited building activity and material cultural achievements in general. Later historians and writers picked up the concept, and popular culture has further expanded on it as a vehicle to depict the Middle Ages as a time of backwardness, extending its pejorative use and expanding its scope.[12]

A lot of stuff happened as it always does. And that again leads to a zillion of other stuff. And how one thing is related to another is of course astonishing, complex and revealing.

You could try this experiment.. read up on history to the start of the 5th or 6th century.. then jump forwards to the 13-15th century and then ask yourself.. what the fuck happened..? What is missing? How did we get here? the so called enlightement must have come from somewhere. And then trade, the city states and the early true nations? The ideas and the ventures? Certainly none of this could have happened without something in between. And then you read up on the "middle ages" and you will find that it is an exciting, wonderful and scary place. It certainly is a completely flawed approach to history to call it "the dark ages".. and IMO the idea that it is a "middle" of some sort is also flawed.

BTW.. you should try to find the old BBC series Connections. Try to google "James Burke Connections". He proposes a much more healthy way to approach history. The music is wonderful. Radiophonic stuff. Brilliant!

So... just do what I normally do. Laughing

In high school, I was fascinated by my history courses and paid rapt attention. I wish more people would develop an interest in how things came to be. I think would foster a general increase in I.Q. for our species.

I'll see about looking up the references you mentioned. Cool

Sometimes I like to imagine how history would have changed if the Romans had invented the steam engine - they got as far as assembling all the necessary components but stopped short of developing a fully functional engine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_technology
