What would you all think of a composition project with only game sound effects/ambient sounds used as the sound source, similar the field recording project?

We could start a collection of game sounds to use for this project and set a deadline.

This is a great idea..

but you have to make sure you are

the copyright holder..
or able to prove the sound is in the Public Domain..
or it is released under an appropriate Creative Commons..

in order to post it on this site.

Let me ask on Doomworld about sound effects and copyright.

Let's see what they say. This group is knowledgeable about game-related things.

Sorry Damien ... John is right ... and copyright should be dealt with properly here. Anyway the reactions on doomworld go that way as well I see.

Yup that is the first question to ask for anything here involving the site and streaming.

Not sure if this would fit into your idea or not but ... Another possibility is using 8bit chips or sw like 8bit sounds to make your own new game sounds project. that way its there is no legal issues if its all created by the artists.

I'm an idiot! (Move over, Bob Moog!)

I totally spaced on the fact that there are many free games out there.

Ergo, this project is now compositions based on sounds from free games.

Those of you on Linux, just check whatever repos you use. There's an ample supply. I'm sure Windows and Mac folks know where to find free games for those systems.

Not good enough Confused free stuff does not mean that you can copy it freely Shocked

The copyright holder needs to agree on mashups here ... e.g. free to be used (sued Shocked ) in derivative works .. I liked Shane's idea to make our own game sounds Exclamation

Shane's idea adds extra creativity! Cool

However, I am simply not going to worry about copyrights on free games. If the designers made it free, I'm going to use it and give attribution. Past a certain point, I'm not going to live my life worrying about every pencil-neck and his lawyers. That's just no way to live.

I'm quite happy to host sound files myself, so as not to violate any rules of this board, if anyone wants to participate. The game has to be free, and sounds cannot be used if the game specifies clearly that it's all tied up in copyright (unless you've obtained permission).

Another thing to note is that it's all fair-use if the source is altered beyond recognition, regardless of copyright.

not true. There is a difference between copyright and license. If you are not licensed to use it, please don't use it here. The license needs to be explicit. DMCA takedowns cost money to deal with, we haven't got that money. For instance a creative commons "no derivatives" license says you can't do that.

If is fair use, probably for non commercial use, but you have to check everything.

My kid downloads a lot of that kind of music so I've been checking into it, because a lot of it is good stuff. The sites have guidelines sometimes.

My point is it's not a blanket statement. If you have a legal opinion that says otherwise, point me at it.

I'm just going to do this myself. Like I said, pencil-necks, lawyers, gah.

Although, for the record, I respect artists. If someone recognises his work in my work and is not happy about it, I will bow gracefully and make it right. That is all that matters to me.

Hi. This may be a moot point, but below is a reply I wrote yesterday morning. I clicked submit, but evidently it didn't get posted. Apologies if some of what I wrote has already been discussed.
Steve

---------------------------------
I can understand that if a growl, for example, was made as work for hire and the corporate entity copyrighted the growl (or maybe the creator copyrighted it), it enjoys the same protections copyrights given to artists against unauthorized use of samples from copyrighted works.

This does not mean that you can't create the sounds on gaming sound chip or a synthesizer and use them to create original music.

If you don't have the means to make chip sounds yourself, you might want to to contact others who do and perhaps ask for contributions to a chip sounds repository, just so long as the posters contribute their own creations, and not sampled from a video game.

Perhaps some DIYers have circuits or tweaks to NES (and other systems) they could share or post links to.

I have thought of pulling out my Commodore C-128 and using the sound creation capabilities of BASIC 2.0 [or whatever its called] to make SID chip sounds. Hmmmm. I do know there are C-64 emulators on line. Perhaps you could use that to emulate SID chip sounds.

My kids are into video games and video game music, and I have thought about creating some sounds to try to develop original chip-like music, so I'd be interested in this (long term, as I already have too much on my list of things to do).

Thanks for raising the discussion. I hope other join in.

Steve

I definitely like this idea, Steve. Heck, we could create a collection of game-like sounds on ANY synth, gather them here, and go ahead with the composition project based on those.

Yes, and you could even put it out on a CC license to invite collaboration and mutation via derivative works.

That, or something similar, is the plan! Cool
