RICHARD WIGGLESWORTH Subject description: live 303,909,606 etc. if you have a taste for acid... |

i've just copied this over from my MYSPACE blog, so it's aimed more at that kinda crowd, but you catch my drift...
| Quote: | if you ever get the chance to see Richard Wigglesworth live grab the oppurtunity with both hands.
i saw him do a live set last night. his setup was (i believe... after the briefest of looks) a 909, 606 and 303 and an analogue mixing desk. there was also a midi synth in there that he ran some pads off [i forgot to mention an fx unit...]. this is an educated guess...
Richard Wigglesworth's set had it all. he built the energy perfectly, the patterns he programmed in were pure acid bliss and he worked the setup expertly. the sound quality was immaculate as you'd expect from such an analogue heavy setup. you simply do NOT get that sound out of a laptop no matter how clever a programmer you are. you can't fake that sound. soft synths simply do not come close and a Richard Wigglesworth live set is a perfect demonstration of that fact.
also it was pleasing to see a producer actually enjoying themselves on stage instead of the moody hooded pouts favoured by so many wannabes. why not dance and wave your arms in the air like a maniac when your music's this good?
before you check out his myspace page i'd like to offer my opinion. i have his demo CD and it is really great as are the tunes up on his myspace page.
However... NOTHING compares to seeing him live, seeing him tweak the vast array of parameters on the fly as best suits his ears given the venue, PA and audience.
i'm a classically trained musician who has played in quartets, chamber ensembles, symphony orchestras. i've also played in rock bands, samba bands, funk bands etc and i've done the live dance music thing too. nothing grates on my nerves more than the assumption that you can't do dance music live - that it's just miming or "letting the machines do it for you..."
check it out, give him some love, add him or whatever. then if you're a promoter, book him and promote the fuck out of the gig because this guy will rock the world of anyone who loves music.

it's not about following the latest "trends" in music. i don't give a f[***] whether the music's fashionable or not. the only thing i care about is whether the music has integrity and is actually any good. and Richard Wigglesworth is very very very good indeed.
peace out

i forgot to mention that all this is reason enough for Luke Vibert to take more than a passing interest in what Richard does...
it was refreshing to see someone refining a genre and having the confidence to express themself in the music and as a result making it very much their own style with their signature written all over it.
it was a skillfully crafted set, not a collection of tunes. _________________ there's no I in TEAM, so let's all act as individuals instead |
