American cinephiles will soon be able to enjoy their movies without sex, violence, swearing - indeed, without any of the interesting bits.

Wal-Mart, the country's mightiest retailer, is preparing to ship a $79 DVD player that automatically strips out potentially offensive content.

The gadget, made by French-owned RCA, aims to tap into mounting concern in the US about media standards.

Things like this depress me. However, at this point it's still a choice thing - I can choose to buy this player or not. What irritates me to no end is when something like this ends up attached to a bill in congress (and of course attached to a bill that has nothing to do with dvd's or decency or the price of chickens...) and a new law states that all dvd players will need to have the technology. Blah.
