Capacitors and warmer/fatter sound. Subject description: audio signal path
i have the x0xb0x (love it, in love with it and want to make babys with it ), i didnt built it my self. but.. i did few mods by my self, one of the mods is to replace few polyester caps to highend caps like polystyrene in the audio signal path, they made the sound warmer and fatter.
so my qustion is this ..in the Sound Lab Plus or in the WSG if i replace the caps that responsible to the audio signal could i get the same resolts ?
if i can get the same resolts.. what caps i need to replace and to what cind do u recommend ?
did some one here made some A to B audio tests with other type of caps other then the ceramic caps ? mm..that could be interesting dont u think guys?
i dont have the SL yet, but when i will have it believe me this is the first thing i'll do and i'll post the resolts here.
or mabye someone already did it and kind enough to share this info with us _________________ http://www.myspace.com/mgmtrance

Hi isak
I'm no real expert on these things - but I don't think you'll get much change in sound changing types of caps in the wsg.
You might be able to 'round off' some of the square waves - smooth them a bit - by experimenting with various caps across the output. Or you could create a type of basic "Tone" control like the circuit below...
Re: "Fat" sound - I think in the Soundlab you will have the basics for getting that in a standard build. The two oscillators, tuned nearly to unison really sound wonderful - That might be what you are looking for.

thanks for u'r reply bruce, and for the link
by saying fat i mean like a sub oscillator, how low the osc freq of the SL goes?
is it something like the minimoog ? i mean more or less.
i dont expect it to be, u know after all a minimoog is a minimoog but even if its a bit colse i'll be more then happy

Hi Isak -
Well - for what it's worth...
I literally grabbed the Soundlab, plugged a sequencer into it and hit record - so this is a crappy demo...
I started it out with one of the oscsillators turned as low as it went (the clicks at the beginning) and then tuned up in frequency. I added a second oscillator a bit into it, then started the sequencer and played with the filter a bit.
It's got a very good range of sounds, and for what you will have into it when it's built - I think it's a good use of your time and $$.
(I don't have a Mini-Moog - but I do have a Micro-Moog - and I think the Soundlab holds up pretty well against it)

short answer: no.
the wsg and sl are fantastic, economical projects, but they are not high-end precision circuits. enjoy them for what they are. the wsg is a noisemaker, and was never intended as anything but. the soundlab circuits are stripped down versions of some of Rays individual modules... still fully-functional, but not quite as precise as the individual modules. the line of individual modules are fantastic (i have a bunch of 'em), but still not the highest end most refined designs--sort of like a honda civic--lowcost, simple, reliable... but you cant simply hotrod any of these with a few simple part's changes and get a ferrarri.
you've asked a couple times about getting "fat" sounds, and mentioned classics like the minimoog for comparison. to get to that level, you should consider VCOs and filters from either Oakely or MOTM (after you've honed your construction chops a bit)... those are designed end-to-end to achieve some of the characteristics you're after.

Thanks for the info b, i understand now that they are only for fun and play.
well, after i'll get them through some effects they will be FAT ! .
Bruce thanks again for the sound clip but..if its not to much to ask, can u please upload a sound clip with 44100 sample rate ?
