"hurling" is an American (northeast, at least) term for being violently sick.
"oh man, it was a great night, until I hurled all over her" translates to a very embarrassing one night stand.
Not that I have ever done that. No, really.
The other term I heard when I was young was "booting", but I think that was because frat boys got their boots wet when they hurled. I was a GDI. Frats and I were not meant to be.
So much for university life. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Thanks guys- it's great getting feedback.
I haven't made any music in ages- and I think this is what is making me aggressive. Life has become too serious.
Matthias, you could try googling tele:funken (sparks crossing between points ) Also tf are my initials
Much of my stuff though is unreleased. I shall post a v-un-v track of two up here soon also. I may also start a thread called "what is v-un-v?" etc? _________________ ACHTUNG!

here's a v-unf track (or v-un-v; we kept changing the name )
named after my nord modular
But then I found that there was actually a track called "the fire engine" by the 13th floor elevators. Now t gets even stranger because on another track I had produced a bubbling-like sound on the ms20- and it turned out that the 13th floor elevator also used a bubbling sound produced by a jug!
This track uses a patch made by some guy on the old NM list Perhaps Jan can remember it?

Tom - "The Voice of Energy" is outta sight.
I'd love to hear how you recorded it. Just so, you know, I can steal the technique.
Holy cow. I'm going to download the rest of the hidden Telefunken when I got something faster than this goddamned @#$ %##$ &%!! %$*@! dial up $#%&! connection from %$#@ !@#!$ &**!! PeoplePc. $%#$ it! I can do it at work tomorrow. $#@!! them.
Tom,
Voice of Energy is a seriously sensational track.
Something to be extremely proud of.
Technically exquisite and compositionally fresh.
I'm impressed. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there.

Thank you boys
Scott, VOE was of course named after a track by Kraftwerk
The production was entirely analogue; no 'computer' anywhere.
ALL sounds were samples and were processed using my old Emulator e6400. The noise samples were taken from jams I had with my friend Richard, who now lives in Japan. snippets of those jams were taken and sampled, so too was shortwave radio. Those etherial drones were infact SW drones mixed with a mellotron sound sing a processor unique to the emulator (you will know what this is if you have an emu- I cant remember the name).
All mixing was done on a Soundcraft Folio SX desk and the effects were supplied from a Boss pitch shifter/ delay module and a Zoom 1201 cheapo reverb.
Sequencing; an Atari STE running Cubase 2.0 (dodgy copy)
It was all mixed down on to Sony Minidisc.
That's it!
Oh yes, one more thing.....

You fell into my trap...perfect......
I'm scanning ebay now for an Emulator e6400, Soundcraft Folio Sx desk, a Boss pitch shifter/delay, a Zoom 1201, an Atari STE (hopefully with a dodgy copy of Cubase 2.0) and a Sony Minidisk. Then, all I need do is look up some chap by the name of Roger. After that's all in place, consider yourself scooped.
The Slovak Radio sample is great as well. Reminds me of many a night with my ear on the Short Wave. I used to love to listen to Radio Moscow and Radio Kiev back in the Soviet days. Did you ever make any music from one of the "numbers" station, or did you figure out if you released such a piece, you'd wind up with mysterious vans following you around?
For some reason, I haven't been able to download the rest of the pieces - things slowed down either at this end or the em end. I'll try again in a bit.

well yes
"A collection of Ice Cream Vans", is a collection of SW number stations. You win the grand prize of being the first person EVER to work this out. I LOVE YOU!!!
The ice cream van is the chime you hear at the beginning of many number stations. Many of the tracks on the LP used the e6400 to mix SW sounds with orchestral sounds.
Sndinter is almost completely made from SW samples- as was Tickertape. Sndinter's 8-bit harp sound is in fact the same sound on the above track- radio slovenia, but slowed down.
I was also dining on a steady diet of Moondog and the Residents when I made that LP.
8 years old. cripes Time to do another
I promised Stein too that we'd also make an LP- but I must get this fucking degree out the way first, then find employment! _________________ ACHTUNG!

Then its time for some music. You know I haven't posted a track in yonks? This track I called "The Voice of Energy"- I'll leave you to work out why I called it that
Originally released in 2001 on very limited edition, just before the Twin Towers in NYC were bombed.- another clue
I really like this one, Tom. Superb. Great mixing. Wonderful tonality. Very evocative. Moving... _________________ --Howard

Well, all of of these tracks are terrific. Thanks so much. What better way to change the mood. Seems like we forgot the music. Thanks for the wake up call... _________________ --Howard
my music and other stuff
I got started with electronic music using shortwave radios and tape machines. My favorite receiver was a Heathkit Mohawk. I was sort of an aspiring Ham but never got a license until I was about 25.
Wow, Scott, you were into that stuff too? I still have a Drake 2B receiver just for musical purposes. It has a tunable IF filter, and tubes of course. I have a modern Kenwood TS870. It's a beautiful rig with DSP and superb audio, but it's not as musical as the old tube sets.
You guys would have loved our Martian Radio Orchestra concert. The PA was about a dozen old pre 1940 radios fed with an am transmitter. _________________ --Howard

I had an old Hallicrafters tube receiver for years. I gave that to my brother's father-in-law several years back (he's an old Ham - he's actually got some of the original prototype transistors from Bell Labs sitting around, I don't know why). The thing had a variable badwidth control on it - it was great receiver to have around. I "graduated" to Rat Shack branded Yaesu, if I'm not mistaken. I miss that old receiver, though.
I also had an IFR 1600S service monitor I used for several years - 250 kHz to 1 GHz, lower if the signal could overcome the zero bang, and would receive *anything* transmitted in AM/USB/LSB, FM or PM. Receive sensitivity wasn't too bad for such a wide range - 10 dB SINAD at around -108 dBm or so. It would even track ANSI 54B analog cell calls (any that came along or a specific MIN) through handoffs though I never used that (that would be illegal, you see, to speak about it) and receive stuff like ship-to-shore, baby monitors, wireless hand-helds, all the public service bands. It could decode POCSAG, DTMF, tone remote and all the european tones, etc. Of course, it could generate in all of these bands as well, up to 7 dBm anyway. A neighbor that drowned my cat wound up on the wrong end of that service monitor at one point. It still works, though the graphics card is shot.
Hands down, the most intriguing sounds emanate from the shortwave bands.

I wonder what the ratio of old EM-ers to SW/Ham is? I had (still have actually, in that damned storage in Connecticut) a Hammarlund receiver. It occupied a prominent position in my living room's equipment rack (of course, you should have an equipment rack in your living room!) for years. I finally stopped using it when we moved to Connecticut in 94 or so, just too much work rigging an aerial. When I was in Vermont, I had rigged a 150ft long wire along one of my fence lines. That was really good.
Yes, shortwave as samples rock. There was a guy who posted some music recently (swedish guy if I recall) here, and he was quite creative too. I'll have to go look for it. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

I got my start in the mid '50s building SW radios. Had my ham license at 13. No way to keep it up after high school, but really great memories. Before TV, radio was the highest technology, and to make your own and listen to the world ... wow!

number stations
I did this remix for my friend Darren of Fortdax a few years back. It was my first (and last ) excursion into NI's Reaktor. It also features a number station.
BTW, I suppose that you all know that 'Numbers' by Kraftwerk is about number stations?
Darren has never released this track- so I'm going to share it with you instead. It's worth checking out his music if you can still find it. It's very Boards of Canada/ Tangerine Dream/ early Vangelis-esq
"W.H.Coder" was my fave track by Fortdax (definately worth finding) and "Cream inside your Spine" is my second fave. I first heard W.H.Coder while I was camping in Norfolk. There had just been this awesome thunderstorm, and I found w.h.coder most fitting. This remix doesn't sound like the original much
