Curious... did Bill Gates hang out a lot with the Eno/Fripp/etc crowd in the 80s or what Question

I wonder if the sounds are going to be part of the OS or just advertising... usually it's just short sounds for dialogs or jingles. This stuff lasts longer. Interesting.

Nice to see they used such talent for the new sounds.
But I think when the BSOD appears the same sound will be heard that was around back in Windows 3.1 days...

In the movie one of the guys said that the hard work now would be to condense this material into 2 .. 6 sec startup thingy and that this would take several months .. interesting indeed :-)

18 months to make the Vista startup sound. (and I thought I was slow) Smile

Don't they realize how many people turn the sounds off in Windows- especially the startup & shutdown sounds?

It looks like they may have used a Clavia synth to make that sound.

Probably they do, as they want to make it impossible to turn off the startup sound.

Its definitly red ... maybe they should include the Clavia demo software to play a startup noodle instead Very Happy

Give me a beep from a built-in piezo speaker any day! Very Happy

On another note (pun intended), why do I get the feeling that Google is going to create an OS that is just as trimmed down as their home page, and everything will run 8x faster? Of course, they'll cache all our hard drive changes Rolling Eyes

If anyone is not impressed with
1. The fact that Microsoft spent 18 months on the startup sound, instead of pooring that money into making sure the OS is more robust
2. And the sound isn't so amazing (no offense to Mr Fripp)
Raise your hands now!

As far as the startup noodle demo, Microsoft may just need a regular noodle- given that tat OS may take such a long time to boot Smile)

I don't they they spent 18 months just listening to sounds over & over. But they do have a point...letting the sound settle in until you either can't stand it, or don't notice it.

However, I agree on the second point, I don't think the sound is very impressive at all. I like Jan's noodle idea.
