I'm very interested in ambisonic sound. I was under the impression that you needed at least 4 tracks for ambisonic sound. Do you work in 4 tracks and then re-ecode to 2 tracks for the CD? A friend of mine, Robin Miller, has developed a very advanced 3D surround system that is a hybrid of ambisonic and ambiophonic techniques. He has a very nice 10 channel surround system. The term ambisonic was used to market the 70's stereo matrix encoded version of quadraphonic sound. The ancestor of Dolby surround. Only three channel at best.
Those old stereos with joystick pan controls were cool though. |

Ambisonic Surround Subject description: How I Work It |
 |
|
| I master in multiple tracks of four channel B-format in Cubase, with the Z channel empty so there's no height information. I mixdown to a single four channel mix when complete. This is then encoded to UHJ 2-channel matrix using AudioMulch and some plug-ins developed by Angelo Farina and the Gerzonic company. This is a stereo compatible matrix and is not so different from Sansui QS and it works pretty well with a Dolby Pro-logic decoder. All my positioning is done externally at the moment, i.e. I pan with analogue equipment. There are ways to do this in Cubase with Ambisonic plug-ins, I just haven't got that far yet. |

Ahr-har!! I've been to your page in the past, and drooled over your frequency shifter. It's a fab piece of work, and I've learned a lot reading the text.
I'm pretty new here as well, but welcome indeed!
Take care,
Scott |

Frequency Shifter Subject description: general chit-chat |
 |

| Ah yes the frequency shifter; I suppose having two in the same box could be considered something of a luxury, but after all, I did have to do all the matrix board soldering to get there:) It is used on the tunes so far but only in a fairly subtle way to make the xylophone, for example, sound more xylophoney, and was used also on the Friedland chime tubular bell to pitch the fundamental correctly, as it just happened to be a convenient way of doing it which I thought might sound interesting. As it happened, that chime is pretty much a sine wave so it didn't. Oh, and the Peugeot 205 car horn is shifted with that, which is more obvious. Perhaps I will devote a track to more frequency shifting experiments, as it does sound pleasantly weird if the whole mix is just taken up or down a little for a bar or so. It might be an interesting "device" used prior to and maybe after a key change. Hmmmm:) |

I'm not familiar with Sansui QS. So, your CD sounds good without any decoders or does it require Dolby Pro-logic? I have pro-logic on my home theater system. Generally, I find it really changes the frequency response when I switch it on, but to be fair I've only used it very occasionally. |

Quad in general Subject description: more surround discussion |

UHJ is stereo compatible so no worries there. When listening in stereo the rear soundstage is reflected into the front with a slightly less accurate positioning definition, so as long as one takes account of that in the mixing process it's fine. Sansui QS was one of the better, old 1970s quad 2-channel matrix formats which had similar encoding to this.
ProLogic does do frequency response things in the rear (i'm not sure on the details) but if you want a surround effect from this disc thats probably the only suitable decoder that's commonly in people's houses. The encoding is basically the right way round regarding left, right, -90 and +90 degree phase shifts so things intended to be in the rear at least come out somewhere back there, and things intended left at least come out to the left etc. |

I thought the xylophone was already the "xylophoniest" of them all _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Nah, there is dude at work. When he gets drunk he will at least compete for the "phoniest" bit.. and right before he implodes he will additionally go heavy on the xylos..
