This question is a bit of a stretch but here goes:

I ran dxdiag on my XP PC and attempted to Test the DirectSound...I got this message:

"Your sound card does not support hardware buffering. Sounds will only play back from software buffers."

In short: what does that mean? I also have problems getting Cubase to work with certain VST instruments...is this related to the problem?

Basicly it means your audio card does not have any memory onboard for the use of audio cacheing, for the reduction of latencies and such. It can halp reduce or eliminate popping and clicking in the audio when the system gets bogged down.

I think.

Yup.. correct... but it might also mean that the drivers does not support the buffers in the card. I forgot.. which card is this?

I use macs so I am used to the "sound manager" and "ASIO" drivers. I know audio support on the PC is a bit more messy.

A bit, yes. It's more ad hoc and makeshift, or used to be. It has gradually improved, and on XP, it's actually quite usable and even nice, but it has been a log road in getting here, and it's still not perfect. It all depends on the card, really, and the quality of the drivers.
