I read an interview awhile back with someone whose name escapes me (Moby maybe?), but they essentially said that the brief period of time in which a musician could get rich via music sales was an anomaly, and that musicians who assumed that it was a State of Nature were fooling themselves.
Musicians seem to be sorting themselves into two groups -- those whining for a past that will never return (Prince, KISS, Metallica, DJ Shadow, Townsend, any major label exec, etc.) and those that are inventing themselves as a brand and building a fanbase that *wants* to give them money. _________________ MFOS Ultimate Expand-o-tron Build Log: http://www.electro-music.com/forum/post-308797.html#308797

Yup. Pete Townsend could be written into this joke...
and without Townsend it reads like:
George W. Bush, the American President, meets with the Queen of England, Elizabeth II. He asks her, “Your Majesty, how do you run such an efficient government? Are there any tips you can give to me?”
“Well,” says the Queen, “the most important thing is to surround yourself with intelligent people.”
Bush frowns. “But how do I know the people around me are really intelligent?”
The Queen takes a sip of tea. “Oh, that’s easy. You just ask them to answer an intelligence riddle.” The Queen pushes a button on her intercom. “Please send Tony Blair in here, would you?”
Tony Blair walks into the room. “Yes, my Queen?”
The Queen smiles. “Answer me this, please, Tony. Your mother and father have a child. It is not your brother and it is not your sister. Who is it?”
Without pausing for a moment, Tony Blair answers,
“That would be me.” “Yes! Very good,” says the Queen.
Back at the White House, Bush asks to speak with vice president Dick Cheney. “Dick, answer this for me. Your mother and your father have a child. It’s not your brother and it’s not your sister. Who is it?”
“I’m not sure,” says the vice president. “Let me get back to you on that one.”
Dick Cheney goes to his advisors and asks every one, but none can give him an answer. Finally, he ends up in the men’s room and recognizes Colin Powell’s shoes in the next stall. Dick shouts, “Colin! Can you answer this for me?
Your mother and father have a child and it’s not your brother or your sister. Who is it?” Colin Powell yells back, “That’s easy. It’s me!” Dick Cheney smiles. “Thanks!”
Cheney goes back to the Oval Office and to speak with Bush.
“Say, I did some research and I have the answer to that riddle. It’s Colin Powell.” Bush gets up, stomps over to Dick Cheney , and angrily yells into his
face, “No, you idiot! It’s Tony Blair!” _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Sigh.
Yeah I know that joke. Pete has always been a bit, well, naive.
But the radio section of iTunes, you'd think he'd have noticed it.
Guess he was in the stall looking for Colin Powell's shoes. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

| Quote: | | Townshend said people who share music for free in the belief that cash would eventually filter down to the artist were "in a kind of denial". "I once suggested that people who download my music without paying for it may as well come and steal my son's bike while they're at it," he added. |
I wonder how many 'stolen' taped recordings then fell into hands of A&R managers, or how many bands were simply made successful because someone taped their act while holding a cassette recorder to the radio or TV loudspeaker?
| Quote: | | John Peel played some records that were so bad that I thought he was taking the piss sometimes |
Peel was a true democrat. You could guarantee that during a Peel session or broadcast show, 99% of the time, the music you heard was bloody awful, but he'd always play something that would rock your little world (even if someone else thought your 'music' was unlistenable 'noise').
How many DJ's (or Radio stations) play highly eclectic mixes nowadays? Music has become so hung up on 'genres' that today it's impossible to hear any radio station that encompasses many different styles of music. It's actually as a result become bland. You can blame BBC A&R management for that.
I still haven't heard Townsend's lecture. But I was talking to a few people in a record shop who had, and they all thought he was being a tosser. _________________ ACHTUNG!

Unfortunately what Townsend is proposing smacks highly of a party political broadcast by the (new) Labour Party. I could write a book on how utterly corrosive to British modern arts the neo-philosophy of the 'creative industries' have been.
You only have to mention the name "tribal dundas", and I begin to break out in a rash. _________________ ACHTUNG!

You just made my day thank you . I was played on the Peel show in the eighties with a Revox A700. I found out how to get feedback and echo on the Revox by plugging into the wrong channel and using the opposite volume to control the the echo and feedback computer audio can.t hold a candle to a Revox class act. I remember all i wrote on the package was John Peel BBC Radio 1 London. |

I know, right? I've run into a few of the whiners. I didn't know what to say to them, and I wondered to myself why they were in this line of work, as they obviously were not happy.
Me, I plan on doing it because it's what I'm here to do. If I make money some day through my hard work, fine. If not, whatever. It has to start by the work being its own reward because it brings you personal satisfaction. If other people appreciate it for what it is, that's icing on the cake. If they want to give you money, it's a huge compliment. |
