Subject description: featuring the original Oramics machine

The Science Museum in South Kensington, London, England is currently host to a special exhibition entitled Oramics to Electronica: Revealing Histories of Electronic Music and features the original Oramics machine (although sadly no longer in working order).

Further exhibits are to be added in October, which - according to the webpage - will "...tell the intriguing story of how electronic sound has advanced, changed and was democratised from the 1950s through to the modern era..."

Hmmm... gotta week's holiday next week - I'll have to stroll on over one afternoon and take a look.

Daphne Oram's book which includes some notes on the Oramics is downloadable from UbuWeb, first entry on this page:

Yes, definitely wait until October. I went down the week before last and there's only a very few items other than the Oramics machine on display right now.

Fascinating bit of kit, though - here's a few snaps from the Blackberry...

Apologies for posting them in reverse. Hers a pic of an oscillator of yesteryear (which was also on display) by way of apology...

Heh, I was there yesterday. Smile

I love the science museum a lot, and will have to make a few more visits. Seeing things like the original Moebius strips, made by Moebius himself makes for nice little gems hidden around there. It is a great place to just wander around and explore.

My favourite part is still the aviation gallery at the back of the 3rd floor. The exhibits have barely changed since I was a kid and - most importantly - it still smells exactly the same Very Happy

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath in through my nose and suddenly... it was 1972 again.

If you're still in the area and in the mood, I highly recommend the Miro exhibit at Tate Modern. You have to pay for this, but it's an entire floor and covers his entire life. Tracing the threads of consistency versus change in an artist of this calibre is very inspiring to me on a music compositional front.
