Subject description: Setting up a broadcast venue for you....
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hi folks, There has been some talk over the years of music in the virtual world of Second Life and it's relation to electro-music.com. I would like to create a performance venue for artists who wish to perform within Second Life. But first I'd like to open a discussion about it.

I have a port on the electro-music station and it's set up with a maximum of 32 listeners, which is a lot actually, specifically for the purpose of beaming into Second Life. To date I think I have not used more than six of those ports at any one time, however it is quite possible that a popular performer will attract a nice crowd so it's good that we have the capacity.

I do not at this time own a stage venue, however I do know people who can help with that, and also I can rent or buy land for that purpose if necessary. I'd just like to estimate the level of interest in such a thing. So if you're interested, now is the time to speak up!

Les

Sounds like a sort of "open mic".

Not being a second lifer, I can't really relate, but it sounds like fun.

Well yes we can have an open mic night if that's a popular idea. Thanks for letting me put your music in the playlist, JovianPyx.

I guess for now I will look into renting some land and building a club and I'll schedule myself for a few performances per week to get things rolling. If you would like to broadcast or add your songs to the playlist, please let me know.

Also if you have some ideas for a stage or club atmosphere, I'd be interested in hearing those. I'm thinking of a giant piano keyboard with moving keys and an electronic theme like circuitry for walls and stuff, maybe something that lights up to show signal flow, not sure. we'll see how it goes... any ideas?

Hmmm, we already have some ideas. I mentioned the moving keyboard staircase notion to MusicMan11712 in chat and he came up with some good ideas. Like making each key represent a set of notes that gets randomly read from so there is not a one-to-one relation between key and note. Then we talked about scanning for avatar position and controlling music that way.

I recall that wmonk and I worked on a transport mechanism from SL to ChucK running client side which would be perfect for this. So now I am thinking of creating an interactive environment for jamming in Second Life with jams from em ports mixed in to the whole.

There are a lot of possibilities here...

Uh, well um, I got a little carried away and i rented 1000 prims in a skybox with a holodeck on it for scenery. If you are already a second life resident, fire up your browser and follow this SLURL:

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cyril%20Beach/20/193/2002

A SLURL is a Second Life URL, or in other words a web link that teleports you to a place in Second Life. This is a full 1/4 sim skybox with plenty of prims for setting up our electro-music interactive exporatory environment. I can't wait to fill it with all kinds of fun stuff! More to follow...

This morning I created a simple test object to fill the sim with fun interactive things: a musical capacitor. The photo below shows what it looks like. It's physical in the sense of game physics engine behavior so avatars can push it or grab it and roll it around.

When it rolls around, a different logic mask is generated from the settled rotation along it's axis. The plates are made slightly oval and 90 degrees rotated, creating four "sweet spots" where the object settles. each stopping position corresponds to a different four-note sequence of three possible notes. I used samples of Princess's voice saying "happy", "joy", and "day" for the notes.

So basically the thing sits there and says joy joy happy day over and over until you get sick of listening to it and either roll it around or shut it off by touching it, lol. But it's cute and I'll make other such interactive objects to keep the sim fun.

I have also created a playlist with Strobe songs, my songs (not the angry ones), and an anonymous friend's songs, plus JovianPyx gave me permission to add his songs which I will do later.

The electro-music SL club is shaping up!

Hi Andy, Second Life is free but it does have an economy. You can open an account for free, explore all sorts of places for free, perform music for free, listen to music for free and even build and script and go to church and socialize all for free. However if you want to buy some game object that someone else has created for the marketplace or tip a performer or rent some land to create your own little world like I'm doing, then you tend to need to reach for the old credit card. So it's free to a point and then if you really get into it you'll find yourself deciding that putting some cash into the game is worth it for you.

On the financial note I'd like to mention that I've sold about 50 copies of my hot product "Pointillism", an inworld sculpting tool that enables you to create artistic game objects, for USD $4 each. So after a year and a half the game is now paying for itself and I no longer need to put money in to participate in the economy. OK, enough said about costs...

How do you get started in Second Life? You simply to to www.secondlife.com and click on the button that says "Join Now" or "Sign Up" or whatever it says. I'll tell you a few things to get you started.

First, your name is important. Just like your electro-music nickname, it says a lot about you and a creative or recognizable name is a good thing to have.

Second, you will need to download a viewer. They will offer you their viewer, which is called "Viewer 2" and I recommend that for starters. It's not the best viewer there is, and opinions on third party viewers vary, but you can switch viewers at any time with a simple download and install.

Third, look me up. My SL name is Inventor Alchemi. Use the search feature and type my name in to find me. I'll show you some places and especially the electro-music club which is really just a room with a few objects in it right now. We can voice chat and/or text chat in person or through their Instant Messaging system (IM) and discuss what I can do to help you get started with SL and music and whatever else you like.

So that's the long-winded answer to a short question! Razz

Here is a photo of another club object that I created about half a year ago or longer. This is a pair of what I named "Siren Stones". You press the outer four leaves and they change size a touch smaller for a moment then play an audio sample of electro-music (with permission of course). One has my synth sounds and the other has Strobe sounds. People tend to have fun playing them for a little while before they get bored.

I plan to have many such attractions scattered about for people to enjoy in the electro-music club.

My wife and I were discussing this very idea of a sound and music museum while visiting the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Museums are so visually oriented. Are there sound and music museums anywhere in the physical world?

Nice work, Les. This will have to go on my to-check-out list for the moment, too many commitments already, but after I get some of those cleared from the deck, I'll take a look and listen. You have permission to use any of my posted audio samples if that's useful.

Based on your images, this looks to be a promising possible outlet for some of my more adventurous Photoshop students as well.

ty Jan and Dale. Yes, you can build some really awesome stuff in Second Life and the building tools are quite intuitive. you can texture with beautiful photoshop images and combine that with the build objects, called prims. To see a video of some of the best looking places in Second Life, just go to www.secondlife.com, and watch the video that appears on that page.

Here is a view of the Em stage with Kevin and Dave's modular synts displayed. If you want your gear on the stage, post a photo to this thread or IM it to me.

Here's a fun little object that I just created, it's a Piano Smiley! It's only prims right now and I plan to animate it and put music samples from ChucK into it, played with of course a Boolean Sequencer, what else?.

The keys will play the ChucK Moog-like model, the bell will ring chimes and the eyes, I don't know what sound should eyes make. All of the parts will move in time with the music. This one may take a while to animate but it will be worth it.

Do you have an idea for an animatronics gizmo that I could create?
