UK's Channel 5 TV uses Reason for Tsunami Relief fund! |
 |
|
Jason Bradbury, who hosts the UK's most watched technology show The Gadget Show was asked to test the hypothesis Can you make a pop hit with nothing more than a laptop comuputer?. He chose Reason to make a three minute dance number. The software was installed on a Sony Vaio with the only other additions being a £20 MIDI Keyboard bought on eBay and a rubbish mic with a sock as a pop shield! But there's more...
The mission also included self publishing the song. The show decided on one of 21 sites who officially submit listings to the UK DOWNLOAD CHART - the idea being to try and get Jason's creation into the Download Chart. So, two days with Reason - fifteen minutes uploading to 7digital.com and the track 'Take It Higher' was ready for purchase. The show and Jasond decided that all the proceeds would go to the Tsunami Relief fund and are now hoping the song will reach the top of the download chart. Read more about making the track at http://www.jasonbradbury.com and support the tsunami victims by buying the track at 7 Digital. _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Shit. With this kind of publicity, anyone could have a top download hit.
Of course you can make a very high quality audio production an a laptop computer. No one with any experience in this field would disagree. A simple laptop with suitable software has the capability of what would have costed over $100,000 US a few years ago.
I haven't ever seen this program. From reading this little article, I'm not sorry we don't get this show. Seems to me it would be more interesting if they would found a young student interested in music production and bought them a computer with software. The show should then be about what they do with it.
The hypothetical young musician would naturally check into the forum and get support and advice from our members. The resulting music might not be a hit, but being a hit is irrelevant. Seeing the value of music as being about hits is like seeing the value of exercise in earnings as a professional athlete. _________________ --Howard

Yah. Nobody should doubt that today's tools make it easy to churn out crap with little effort. Using the "tsunami relief" excuse in an attempt to push lousy instant music to the top of the charts is sleazy exploitation.
So say I, after a good bottle of wine with dinner and another day of not _really_ producing any decent music.
