| Well I must admit I would have the Christians as more deadly myself, based on history that is. |

I agree w/the OP...but that'll still cost you...dammit, where's that $75 emoticon when you need it? (I get Muff's and this place confused sometimes!)
I wonder how many Christians and westerners in general know that the Qur'an begins with the virgin birth of Christ...you know, the whole Christmas story thing...?
I know for a fact that when most people here see a Sikh they think they're seeing a Muslim.
I'm not saying Americans are stupid...but they are generally ignorant. (Look it up, it ain't the same thing.) _________________ Looking for a certain ratio since 1978 |

Off the top of my head, a quick calculation suggests that nationalism is the most destructive religion out there. Second up is imperialism. You can spice both up with gods and what have you, but that would only be a thin glazing on the killer cookies. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Not checking for responses yet, so those who are my friends, please don't feel I'm ignoring you.
I was just reading this conversation posted by a guy whose wisdom I admire (himself an American), and something in Steppling's third paragraph turned on a light bulb for me:
"I am constantly amazed when I run into Americans over here, amazed at how jaw droppingly ignorant they are. They don't travel really, not to explore. They vacation. They cling to notions of privilege. They increasingly show open contempt for other cultures and peoples."
The two people on these boards who have REALLY pissed me off with their hate speech and backward ignorance were Americans.
I'm just truly ashamed to be from such an ass-backward country. I apologise to my non-American friends on behalf of the stupidpower nation I was born in.
Back to taking a break from the boards. |

I'd be interested in some context - surely there was more than that? Or perhaps because it offended you I should just nod my head and agree? Or is that really what you consider 'Hate Speech' as opposed to an opinion?
But, never mind - I'd likely just bend your answer to fit my own prejudice 'cause I'm an ignorant, self absorbed, unable to think for himself Lemming. (American). And even worse - a conservative Lemming.
At any rate Audioef, please don't apologize for me. You don't know me, or what I think - and apologizing to your non-American friends for an entire population - or threatening to report 'Hate Speech' to moderators when you are offended in a chat room both seem a bit lame.
I'm not happy with many things this country does as a nation, but I think the vast majority of the population are decent people like yourself who want to do the right things.

That would be equivalent to a Muslim stating that he is ashamed of being Muslim because of something some other Muslims did. In either case, it's a crashingly presumptive thing to say, and I'm tired of reading such things. Not because I don't believe there's a large percentage of assholes out there, or that there are some really fucked up things happening, but because it gives amazingly short shrift to a large number of people that don't even remotely fit the description and actually adhere the same concept you're trying to express.
I work in a place that has Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Budhists, liberals, conservatives and flying spaghetti monster adherents, and we get along just fine. We not only work together, we party together, we share joys of births and sorrows of death. We're not after each other with meat hooks or snide remarks. And that's right here in 'Merica.
Are there things wrong in the USA? Sure, lots of things are fucked up. Try finding a place where things aren't fucked up in one way or another. In any case, when people lump "Americans" into one big faceless trailer park bigot, they're lumping me in there, and I always find that disturbing and more than vaguely insulting.
I understand what you're trying to say, but you fall into the same trap you're railing against. Sweeping generalizations are never good, whether it's about Muslims, Americans, French, British, German, Christians, Atheists, Conservatives, Liberals, dogs or cats. _________________ My Site |

Every country has its fair share of fukwits.
Nothing to do with being from the USA
btw - whenever someone tells me they are 'enlightened' and/or 'intelligent', my brain spasms and a bit of wee comes out. |

Wow. Well, nothing jaw-droppingly elitist in any of that now is there? |
