Will be interesting to see if this idea gains traction:

http://www.cellaenergy.com/uploads/press/Filling%20up%20with%20hydrogen%20now%20a%20real%20possibility.pdf

Quote:
Filling up at the pumps with hydrogen instead of petrol has moved a step closer to reality with the launch of a new company which holds the technology to make it happen. Cella Energy Limited is a brand new spin-out company from STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. It is developing a novel technology that allows hydrogen to be stored in a cheap and practical way, making it suitable for widespread use as a carbon-free alternative to petrol.

here's a title you might like to check out, Kevin:

http://www.amazon.com/Hydrogen-Economy-Jeremy-Rifkin/dp/1585422541

imagine a complete flip of the system where each individual home generates power and feeds a larger grid where extra power is stored for public use.

you can imagine theres resistance to such an idea and the research and tech development to make it happen.

Dan, looks like an interesting book and I'll check it out.

I see the major advantage of hydrogen is that it is the most abundant element in the universe and the by product of burning it is H2O.

The disadvantage is that it is expensive to produce and hard to store. However, we may find ways to cross these hurdles. The technology from Cella Energy addresses the storage issue -- and apparently can make use of elements of the existing infrastructure.

However, to make Hydrogen requires electricity -- and it most likely will come from a coal-fired plant. So, we still have a ways to go.

That's what I was getting at - we could generate electricity from sun, wind and water instead of coal (or worse).

I've always preferred balance. Perhaps a good power system for human society uses hydrogen, solar, wind, and hydro in various combinations (and then there's kinetic for moving systems).

Perhaps it uses hydrogen, but keep in mind hydrogen is just an energy transport medium, like electricity and streaming water.
The good thing about this particular medium is that it doesn't require long wires Razz

Always separate energy sources from energy mediums. Wink

But isn't it the case with current hydrogen technology, that it requires large amounts of energy (and long wires), to produce hydrogen that is pure enough to use in the cells?

Or have things moved on?

It indeed costs a lot of energy, (for example the power plant-to-wheel efficiency is about 25%). Does it require long wires? Not really, hydrogen plants don't have to be large scale to optimise the process. As of that, it is possible to have small plants near power plants. Now the big problem here is, power plants aren't very efficient too Razz
There are other tricks to produce hydrogen, without using electricity. An example from a few years ago was bacteria (http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2008/080825.htm) After that article, I didn't hear more about this technology. Wonder what happened to it.

The developers got the flu and health and safety officials pulled the plug due to fear of biohazzard? It's the usual suspect! Wink

A lot of people don't seem to understand that hydrogen is not a source of energy: it is only a means for storing it.

Hydrogen does not exist on Earth in a pure state. It has to be separated out from water, leaving oxygen as a byproduct. This takes energy. When it is burned, it recombines with oxygen to produce energy. With inefficiencies, it is a net loss: more energy is used to separate, store, and transport the hydrogen than is released by burning it.

This doesn't mean it can't be used as a viable means of storing and transporting energy. The energy still has be generated - by burning coal, damming a river, or with turbines of solar collectors - before it can be stored in hydrogen form.

That and most other arguments I hear against using hydrogen are only true when you look at the technology in its current state.

The two big issues with it now are:
1) To separate hydrogen from water you need a catalyst and energy, the former is expensive and the later reduces its overall efficiency and environmental impact.
2) It's difficult to store in the quantities needed because it's a gas, not a liquid and therefore not an energy dense substance.

However, both of those points are the target of some pretty aggressive research. If you do a google search, you'll find many, many articles addressing problem 1. I've seen where it's been produced by bacteria; urine (yep, cow pee); using cheaper/more abundant catalysts; and even using cheaper catalysts, ordinary tap water, and nothing more than sunlight to produce it.

Problem 2 is probably a bit tougher, but recently I saw where it's been found that under pressure and in the presence of some other materials, it can be stored essentially as a solid.

It's not a ready for prime time thing yet, but it's becoming more and more feasible as more research progresses.

...Also, what's all this talk about burning it? Fuel cells are where it's at once we get to the point where hydrogen can be cheaply produced and stored.

The cool thing about fuel cells in the auto industry is that auto manufacturers would no longer need to re-tool factories to build more powerful engines. Basically they would have factories pumping out 2 or three different chasis (sports car/sedan, van/truck, other) where the fuel cell engine is part of the chasis. Fuel cell engines are built in layers. The more layers, the more powerful the engine. The exact same factory, on the exact same product line, could produce engines tailored to the customer's need, just by adding the specified # of fuel cell layers.

This would also open the door for all kinds of custom bodies. Anything that fits a particular chasis could be made, plopped on top, away you go!

Pick you auto's color, body style and accessories, interior, AND engine specs! Lovely.

Problem 1:
Current hydrogen splitting technology requires platinum as the catalyst, extreme cold temperatures, high pressure and some kind of organic additives or solvents to treat the water.

Here's one that works with only a cobalt catalyst at room temperatures, neutral pH water and uses sunlight: http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2008/oxygen-0731.html

I really think a combination of solar and hydrogen goes a long way to solving the energy problem.

But even just driving down the cost of the catalyst (platinum retails at $2,000 an ounce!), and getting rid of the need for the other organic additives/sovents makes it much more feasible (this one works on dirty water or even salt water):
http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2010-05/cheap-metal-catalyst-can-split-hydrogen-gas-water-fraction-cost

..and more:
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=new-catalyst-produces-hyd

Tons of research and ideas all addressing the same problem. All very encouraging if one can be found that's possible to be scaled up.

My dream is that every house will be totally off the grid. All you need is sunlight, a home hydrogen plant, fuel cells and water.

From a national security standpoint this would be idea. No one would be able to bring your power grid down, because their isn't one. You'd need to set off a major EMP bomb to disrupt power to a large swath of a country.

Sure, but you can say that about anything really.
