Digital music a long way from displacing CDs |
 |

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/26/digital_music_report/
| Quote: | It's going to be a long time before digital music downloads challenge CD sales, even in the online world. That's the conclusion of a report by market watcher Informa Media Group (IMG), published this week.
Come 2010, IMG says, global online music sales will exceed $6bn. An impressive number, but still only 15.2 per cent of total spending on music worldwide.
But still a healthy sum to share among the likes of Apple's iTunes, Napster, Virgin Digital, Wal-Mart, Tesco and co., surely? Well, not quite. That figure represents not only sales of digital downloads and subscription revenue, but CDs purchased from Amazon and co.
Digital downloads will account for half of the total - $3.1bn.
That amounts to 7.7 per cent of total music sales, leaving CD, DVD and their successor physical formats taking 92.3 per cent of the market. |

at one time, cd's were a long way from replacing tape and vinyl...and at another time, recordings were a long way from rivaling live performance
perhaps we will see a rise in digital music when the format is more affordable? yes, I am aware itunes is inexpensive, but ipods are not affordable to everyone. Also, not everyone has a computer yet... technology will intergrate at the rate it decides to intergrate...I think the modern file exchange formats will increase with said devices. |

I agree. It all depends on the actual platform, not on the concept of "downloadable files" as such. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

(a bit OT) As a graphic designer, I also think it's sad that with each generation of format, the visual artist loses 'real estate'. Remember gatefold LP's?! What a canvas! The CD jewel case (albeit smaller) has so many possibilities. But now, the marriage art & sound may be lost forever. I guess interactive 'albums' (artwork) will exist, but it's not the same. I like the collectability... the tangibility. _________________ "Pop music is for sheep and we are wolves disguised as shepherds." |

I like the tangibility as well, but the medium will change. I don't think the format will be lost though...Vinyls had some impressive artwork that had to be shrunk on the comparitively microscopic CD jewel booklet...erhaps digital will be a step backward. Full monitor size artwork could be distributed in a downloadable package...I also like the idea of offering full length, musically influenced movies with downloaded albums as another way of presenting the music.
Regardless, the art distribution medium will change with the music distribution medium, but think of it as a challenge and new opportunity to exercise creative abilities. |

Now that I'm thinking about, CD's have really been pissing me off as of late. They scratch easy and they're a pain to alphebatize (unless you have large, special, expensive furniture that makes this easier). I can't imagine how much of a pain massive vinyl collections presented for moving and organization? (anyone have horror stories they'd care to share about this? ) |
