I'm proud to say I have contributed to the market value of neither!

Actually I only own stock in a small startup that's struggling, but you never know...

Apple may have it's problems, but I choose Apple over the evil empire any day.

Apple may be exhibiting big brother signs, but at least they make quality products. Microsoft's products were the bane of my existence for decades. How they were so successful putting out such bad software I really don't understand.

How is McDonald's so successful in putting out such bad food? (Answer -- it's what people want: something cheap, barely functional and just like what everybody else has.)

Anyway, the only thing keeping Apple from being evil for so many years was its lower market share. They had to play nice with other systems. Now they have a new and improved business model: mobile devices where they have ultimate control over what you are and are not allowed to do with them. That's evil enough for me.

Because their products pander to the lowest common denominator - people who really have no clue about computers. Ladies and gents, have some Microcrap.

It's why I use Linux (Gentoo is my favourite). It does NOT pander to anything. Programmers write stuff they want to write and if you can't be bothered to RTFM, tough noogies! Ladies and gents, have some Stuff That Works! (Well, usually. I won't get into the recent developments of KMS and libpng, which are complete bombs in the opinions of some serious users, myself included.)

That is true, Apple has been showing signs of evil. They've been practicing planned obsolescence for some time now in addition to other things mentioned.

Linux, though way cool for those with the knowledge and time invested in it, was not the right solution for me because of dependency Hell.

Maybe there are no good guys after all?

If you bought Apple back in the day, now is the time to sell--or at least take some of your profits off the table.

Markets move in fads, and fads don't last forever. Not to mention what will happen to Apple's stock if something happens to Steve Jobs.

It looks pretty nifty. I prefer something actually installed on my music machines, though, since I don't dual boot or need any more than the one OS I've selected for a machine's purpose. Then there's the based on Ubuntu part, which is a red flag for me. I recommend Ubuntu to anyone who wants to get away from both Windows and Mac, but I don't like it for my own purposes. It's got too much fluff in the way and I like to get under the hood without having to open the bonnet 50 times. Razz

There was a depressing thread along the lines of - "what if you spent the $3000 you paid for a PowerMac G4 system back in 2003 on Apple stock instead?"

Oh well.

Oh, you can play the what-if game on anything. I bought a Performa back in college, and a few days later, out came the PowerMacs.

yes.... that is generally how big companies work! Rolling Eyes

As for this crazy paranoid shit about Apple being an evil empire, have you ever stopped to think how folk outside of the USA think of America?? All that international English versus English (US) crap. Rolling Eyes Laughing Wink

Apple are a LONG way off being an evil empire! XP is still yet to die off in Europe! I would say it is the IT department that has become the evil empire. That and CCTV? Dunno? Do you know?? WTF do I know? Shocked

Sure. The guy who started that thread calculated that his hypothetical $3000 investment in Apple stock instead of PowerMac G4 would have appreciated in value to $90000+ today.

Is that an argument for Apple not being an Evil Empire?

I dare say Apple has given that other Evil Empire a run for their money. It all went down hill after the Apple II Razz

It includes ubiquity - xfce menu > system > install pure:dyne. It turned my winxp netbook into a snazzy dual-boot system in a matter of minutes (just b/c I needed *koff koff* to keep the xp partitions around Sad -- the installer can just as easily kill the old OS if you like).

That's fair -- matter of taste. One of my colleagues in my old job also likes gentoo for the same reason.

Well to be honest, no more than Roland or Korg or Yamaha either. All companies produce a product that "almost but not quite tastes like tea", don't they? If you want, you could blame all the world's PC problems on the developers, not the PC makers, because ultimately it is they who create the interface.

I really don't see any difference between Linux, Windows or OSX. They all pretty much do the same thing. It's been 20 years and the basic computer interface has changed very little (apart from the computers within those Rolands and Yamahas etc etc).

I just happen to prefer the Mac operating system as my PC.

That's just horrible.

Nouveau Evil Empire or not, I no longer buy computers new. There's absolutely no reason to. For that matter, I don't buy clothing new, either. About the only thing I buy new are synths and other music gear, unless the thing I want isn't made any more. For some reason, such products aren't prone to being produced by Empire wannabes. For some completely unknown reason. Razz

True! However, they all get to it in different ways, and therein is the dividing factor. Windows puts boat loads of shit in your way that I have no patience for. Linux does whatever you tell it to do, no questions asked (Windows asks too many questions. Maybe good for the computer boobs, but tedious for me). OSX I actually like - I just don't have a Mac currently.
