Am trying to decide how to build a modular synth. The MFOS modules look really nice and the mp3 sound samples are great, but mp3s misrepresent how things sound, so how ballsy is the sound really? I'm used to minimoog, arp 2600, obxa level of punch and zing. I don't want to spend time building something that only makes whimpy sounds.

I don't have much experience with the synths you mentioned - although I have a Micromoog and an Elektor Formant in addition to my own DIY Synth. and the MFOS is not lacking for anything I want to do.
I started building using lots of MFOS modules - and the modular vids I've posted here
http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?feature=mhw4
are primarily made using MFOS including the VCO's, filters, ADSR's and VCA's...and other MFOS offerings...although I have, and use other DIY modules too. I'd guess maybe a third or more of my synth is MFOS...

Others have a different music style than me - but the vids offer a few samples of sounds anyway...

Bottom line - I'd build them again.

I´m building my first one (trying to) and I think you could expect the sound to be something near a Doepfer A100 or the new Doepfer Dark Energy, in other words better than Virtual Analogue/Soft synth but not as warm as the classic analogue sound.
