Subject description: Testing hard drives in nuclear accelerators?
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

I just got a refurb Seagate 500 GB pipeline hard drive. Check out THIS warning:

Caution. Product warranty is void if any seal or label is removed, or if the drive experiences shock in excess of 350 Gs.

Shocked

What were they testing the drive with, neutron bombs? I could HURL the thing out my second-floor window onto the pavement below and still not void the warranty! I could hit it with a hammer and not void the warranty!

You could drop it from your hand and void the warranty. Wink
It's only experiencing 1G as it accelerates towards the floor, but as it hits the floor, it could easily experience a deceleration in excess of 350Gs! Smile

Difficult to prove if unplugged, but the drives have 3-axis accelerometers and track those things Wink

(The sensor is actually to help the servo system account for vibration and to stop writing if a shock does occur, so the head doesn't write data over other stuff, but I'm pretty sure max_shock is stored along with the rest of SMART information).

I common accelerometers I messed around with a couple of years ago didn't register above a couple of Gs.

I find apps where you're supposed to tilt or smack your MacBook (e.g. http://code.google.com/p/smacktop/) kind of humorous, a bit like the app that played a song by vibrating the floppy driver head on C64s (or was it Amigas.) Why no just wham the laptop into a wall, and record it with a mic for percussion!

Last night, in addition to installing my new hard drive, I opened up the PSU for the n-teenth time to disconnect the PSU fans, since I have sufficient air flow without them and killing the fans would reduce the noise output of the machine overall. After disconnecting the red and blue power leads and leaving only the ground leads in, the PSU still said no. That was very aggravating. The air flow is there, but there's a hardware fail-safe based on whether the PSU can operate the fans (probably tach), not on whether the airflow is there. I know, I know, the people who made it didn't expect me to hook up an 80 CFM, 0.3 Sone external ventilation fan, but shit, I know what I'm doing. So after having to plug the PSU fans back in, I wanted to wham the whole thing into the wall, record it with a mic and save it as the sound of frustration.

If you don't want the noise, you might be able to remove the blades off the fan, and it'll spin and give back tach readings, but not turn air movement into an acoustic event!

I was thinking earlier of doing that. I just don't know how to open the fan casing without breaking it. I just ordered some extra RAM, so when that arrives, I'll spend some time looking at the fans. They're very securely screwed onto the PSU chasis - I could not unscrew them last time I tried.
