Hi,

I'm using Ray's wall-wart based power supply for my modular, and have almost completed the first cabinet. Still plenty of current capacity, but I am starting to wonder about needing a second power supply for the next cabinet. Is there any problem in using two wall-wart power supplies (that is, each with their own rectifier/capacitor board)? My concern is that the Ground is connected to one of the AC secondaries from the wall-wart - with two wall-warts, do I need to ensure that I use secondaries that are in phase with each other, since the two Grounds will obviously be connected?

thanks

Peter

There is no problem with using more than one power supply to power different modules which will be used together, and it does get necessary when the modules start to add up.

Just wire them both up correctly and if all goes well volts is volts. Wiring sections in or out of phase i believe only comes into play when you are talking about a dual secondary type transformer, where both secondaries will be rectified together to produce a single source of DC. What you are talking about is two distinct transformers and i do not believe that the phase will matter at all.

(i am not actually qualified to give any advice at all on dangerous electrical matters, but i have used different power supplies to power simultaneously running modules without regard for the phase of the secondaries with no ill effects, and i think you will be fine also)

Wouldn't it be desirable to have modules that need to track together on the same power supply -- such as a bank of VCOs?

Well, yeah, good point. I was just addressing the "will this work" portion of the question, there are probably lots of "fine tuning" type issues of power supply design and implementation like VCO tracking, signal bleed and ground loops that i am woefully underqualified to advise on, any corrections or additions are welcome.
