|
2 tracks that are somewhat outside of the style i am into these days..but still a guitar + electronics + vocal in a song format..[recently, i have been experimenting with a rock n roll + electronics sound]
these tracks go back a few years but i was thinking of doing more like this now..
any thoughts _________________ Spiral Recordings |

Both are great. Track 1 has a swedish touch to it. Excellent, and track two is a mix of Syd Barrett and Suede. These can be hits! _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

this kind of music is not my "cup of tea" but I think they both sound good (swedish touch or not ). _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

I concur that the first track is bang-on., although I enjoyed them both.
Here's my 2 bits of constructive criticism: I listened to 'generate it' first and the most prominent thing that I thought could use improvement would have been the vocals. Listening to the first track next, the vocals were absolutely positively great to listen to and although I wouldn't suggest changing the vocal style for 'generate it', it still seems like there's something (for a listener with my background anyways) slightly not right. Maybe a little flat in places, or needs a little melodic variety in places.
Listening to first track: some of the guitar parts stand out in front of the vocal during places where it seems like the vocal should be standing out in front of the guitar...maybe an issue of having relatively strong effects on the vocals. [on second thought this seems like just a general mix issue that may be somewhat subjective]
As for a general direction, I've often thought that 'rock' music seriously benefits from bringing in outside influences. The 'electronic music' qualities in these tracks are really well done and my vote would be for continuing in this direction.
BTW, I hope you're able to get that first track distributed somehow. If I were still reviewing music in college radio, it would be broadcasting over the central Minnesota airwaves.

and i think your observations regarding the mixes [and the somewhat flat vocal] are totally accurate...i really appreciate those insights...

Woah... Man, Paul, these are great songs.
I really like them. I listen to a lot of stuff on the pop radio so as to try to keep up with new pop music. Your stuff is prime. Great arrangements. I like the vocals. Feels good...
In the first one I was feeling the vocal was to far back in the mix. I couldn't understand the words. Other than that, these tunes are are really wonderful.
Will you please send me your autograph? _________________ --Howard

Glad to hear you appreciated the comments! Praise is always nice but I thought the tracks also deserved a few minutes of critical listening. Of course, the few things I noticed are really somewhat minor relative to the already high production quality.
My only mixing experience has been working on my first release, and no real recording experience to speak. I do have a simple mic-external pre-soundcard (M-Audio, not soundblaster) setup but haven't really made good use of it yet. Still thinking about the best way to use it I guess since I'm no longer competent with any instrument.
cheers

Whoah. I just now got ahold of this. I am not sure what to say to do you any favors of praise, except to say that I was enthralled.
I often find it extremely hard to speak how a song affects me in positive and negative ways. Simply amazing, I will leave it at that!
