Facebook's friend suggestion algorithm Subject description: add gorgeous women or identity thieves? |
 |
|
I was wasting my time opening facebook when I noticed something peculiar; Facebook's friend suggestion algorithm is suggesting me to add unknown models as friends. WTF?!
I have no friends in common, and I doubt they know me. I can't stop wondering why are these people appearing as friend suggestions and how does the friend suggestion algorithm work?
What is facebook trying to tell me? Who are these people? Are they real or are they identity thieves and they added my email to the facebook email friend finder and fed the algorithm info so they can appear to me in the frontpage and for me to say "oh, I need more unknown internet friends that look like models and have no common friends with me... I should add them because I need some potential kidnapper or weird person stalking my every move"
Delusional paranoia? NO! I like to call it "justified paranoia". I've been victim of identity thieves. Yes, and I have proof... Like a year or so, some attractive girl added me as a friend, I accepted the friend request because her facebook info said she was in the same college as I was, we became "internet friends" but I smelled something fishy that went beyond my natural salmon oil capsules ... so I searched the university's student database and the person didn't exist :S!
You're probably thinking -this guy probably is just being too paranoid, schizotypal ... but no! In the last years a lot of people have been kidnapped in the city I live in, and there are reports that criminals use social networks to get their victims. An important part of the modus operandi of these criminals is to know their victims, what a better place than facebook to know your victim?
Anyways, I was thinking that social networks should implement some kind of potential scammer/extortionist/kidnapper detection algorithm.

They show for me, and you can easily unfriend anybody on Facebook.
Yes, there are hacks which attempt to scam facebook users. Bring it to the attention of Facebook and they will deal with it. They seem responsive to this sort of problem. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

RU Serious?
Failbook seems to change their code daily and don't do just about anything right. They want copies of driver's licenses for musicians to play their music (NO-HO-BUDDY else does this) and want your cell phone # to verify you for certain things. It's hard to find the "contact us" form and they have never responded to any of the reasonable suggestions I've ever given them. Not to sound humongously egoistic, but it seems to me that nobody I've ever interacted with in the IT world (and I'm a former programmer), either as a user or programmer, has ever done thing one right.
I despair for the future of humanity and the rest of the planet. All based on Failbook.
Having now gotten off my soapbox, if ya don't know 'em, stuff 'em. |

I don't even open my door if I don't recognise the visitor and if I'm not expecting anyone. Especially lately when there have been morons knocking and running, or not responding to "who's there?".
Us humans are the bizarrest freaks ever. |

Despite Facebook's safety and privacy controls, Facebook cannot guarantee that the site is entirely free of illegal, offensive, pornographic or otherwise inappropriate material, or that its members will not encounter inappropriate or illegal conduct from other members. Consequently, you may encounter such content and conduct. You can help Facebook by notifying us of any nudity, pornography, harassment or unwelcome contact by clicking on the "Report" link located on pages throughout the site. Facebook will use its best efforts to review reports made through this site reporting tool within 24 hours and remove any content that is deemed to have violated the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. If warranted Facebook will also warn or disable the user responsible for posting the abusive content. Where complaints about nudity, pornography, harassment or unwelcome contact are made by independent email to abuse@facebook.com, Facebook will acknowledge receipt of the complaint and begin to address it within 24 hours. Facebook will respond to the reporter within 72 hours of receiving the email complaint to inform them of the steps Facebook has taken to address it.
Click here to contact the Independent Safety and Security Examiner (ISSE) regarding Facebook's complaint handling procedures. Please note that if you have not previously made a complaint to Facebook you should not use this link. Facebook is solely responsible for complaint handling, and you should address all complaints or reports of abuse directly to Facebook using the procedures described on this page.
We ask that all users to report suspicious people and inappropriate content they encounter on Facebook. We also strongly encourage users under the age of 18 to talk to a parent or a responsible adult immediately if someone online says or does something to make them feel uncomfortable or threatened in any way.
Remember that although using fake names is a violation of the Facebook Terms of Use, people are not always who they say they are. You should always be careful when sending friend requests to, or accepting friend requests from people you do not know in the real world. It is always risky to meet anyone in person whom you don't know through real world friends.

Whether or not they are good at it, if you don't report it, it doesn't get logged. Suit yourself. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.
