Hangovers give UK biz a headache |
 |
|
Hangovers cost British businesses an estimated £2.8bn as companies lose out on an estimated 29m days from workers throwing sickies - and throwing up.

Eh? Hands off my mug you thieving get!
I don't have a picture to hand of my favourite mug but I can provide a loving description. It's a medium size mug with a shiny glaze finish with a complete periodic table of the elements on it, right up to atomic number 118 if memory serves. I bought it in the Science Museum in London for a friend Sam for Christmas but ended up not giving it to him because I liked it to much.
As for beer, I'm definitely a fan, but also like the odd whisky or vodka or ten. Hurray! _________________ This message was brought to you from Beyond The Grave. |

Anyway, my favourite mug is a bit like a mugshot of me - not very pretty.
It's a commemorative mug that I was given for taking part in a concert in Selbu, Norway, where I spent my formative years. This was in 1988, and all the bands that had existed in the area took part, even the ones that had split acrimoniously. This being a mountain community, most of the bands were fairly mainstream, concentrating on mainstream dance music, some of them even incorporating the squeeze box
My band, Sneakers, were a rowdy band who played mostly rock'n'roll covers, interspersed with a few originals penned by yours truly. We went berserk, just like the old days, causing a division in the audience (btw, 1400 paying concert goers in a community of 4000 -not bad, eh?): Half the audience hated us with a passion, the other half loved us. -Just like the old days. The local newspaper summed us up thus: "As for "Sneakers," it would have been better if the audience had been spared; Their stage demeanor was a bit like New Guinean cannibals dancing."
This being a memorable occasion, I still treasure my old worn out mug commemorating this event. _________________ Where there are too many policemen, there is no liberty. Where there are too many soldiers, there is no peace. Where there are too many lawyers, there is no justice.

That sounds like an awesome gig. I bet in that village they still talk about it like it was Woodstock or something! Got any pics? _________________ This message was brought to you from Beyond The Grave. |

Sorry, I don't know of any pix, and the guy who gave us that nice write-up is out of circulation - he must be in his late sixties by now. Plus, I don't reckon the local paper have digitized their photo archives. As for the awesomeness of that gig: Round about the same time as that cocert, they started using a big island in the river, Årsøya, for squeeze-box festivals and other events - all of them with the kind of profile that goes down ell with the trailer park crowd, you know, DODGY. This is hillbilly country, see. The locals aren't too concerned with the past; they mostly can't remember it due to collective alcohol poisoning. To go back to your regional speciality thread, these folks would most likely drink a moonshine-and-reindeer sperm mix. Oh, and I just remembered about a year later, a few of the bands that took part were asked to record a song for a compilation cassette. We recorded one of my songs, an atrocious little number that for some reason got really popular locally. That was another strange experience. Our drummer hadn't really been playing lately, so I borrowed mate's Atari / Hybrid Arts combo, fed my Mirage and Roland D110 from that, which took care of the drums and keyboards. The D110, as you may know, has stereo plus six mono outs, so I sent the kick, snare and hihats to the individual outs. I'd very cleverly programmed a nifty drum part, where a cross-stick sound took over from the BIG, eighties snare drum for the first part of the guitar solo. The engineer, who was the leader of one of the other bands, AND got paid handsomely for the use of his studio, erased the cross-stick of course.
I then called him up, saying as how I'd love to be there for the mixing session; I was, after all, familiar with the song, having written, arranged and programmed it, in addition to providing rhythm guitars, backing vox and organ., clever b'stard that I was. "No, that's not on, imagine if represantatives of all the bands were to put forward similarly ludicrous demands...." Ah well, when the cassette was finally released I took one listen at a mate's place, then decided not to bother hunting down my own copy. It was AWASH in reverb, we're talking Carlsbad!!! Ever since, I've wanted my own little studio setup, which I've now got, thanks to my parents. _________________ Where there are too many policemen, there is no liberty. I've actually tried to post a pic, but for some reason I don't get the "attachment" dialogue box. When I get that sorted, I shall share it with you. Oh, like I said first time around, it's ugly, or at best unassuming, but having suffered through my harangues, I suppose yer entitled to have a gander at it. Anyway, that posting is some time in the future, as I'm on my way to watch my teacher colleagues get plastered at a start of term bash. Apparently some of them end up, as we say in Norway, "feeding the gulls. _________________ Where there are too many policemen, there is no liberty. Mosc, I'm all about satisfying your mug craving, but only the small fact of not owning a digital camera is holding me back. If you are willing to merely send me one in the post, I will happily provide you with my address. Then I will send you a picture of every mug in the cupboard! _________________ This message was brought to you from Beyond The Grave. |
