Ditto.
My more creative stuff occurs when I am sleep-deprived at 3am, but that is a rare occasion. I need to slow down the Earth's rotation so there are more hours in a day. _________________ One Player Game | OPG on SoundCloud |

It used to be late at night for me but recently I've started writing more early in the mornings (=before noon) and daytime. Hmm, maybe I'm getting old. _________________ For mind-boggling experimental music:

Usually early in the morning, when my son is off at school.
The main impediment are the kids around. Not so bad when I'm doing keyboarding, but they must be away when I'm doing vocal production or comping vocal tracks. _________________ ---

What time of day do you create music usually?
A: Between 12 midnight and 4 AM
How often do you work at it (ie. twice a week)?
A: Lately, only two or three times a month.
What inspires you to create?
My mood, current events and cool new gear/software!
What are your major distractions to creating?
Reading complex manuals. I'd rather feel like less of an engineer and more like an artist. |

With Bhajis Loops on my Palm computer, anytime, when and wherever. I see it as a sort of electronic acoustic guitar come musical pandora's box!
At night usually works better for me, and because it's a Palm, I often do it in bed

Well things are different now, because I have kids. So whenever I get a chance (and because my Palm is pocket sized, I don't have to worry about being tied to a desk which is really nice- just don't leave home without the headphones! )

What time of day do you create music usually?
I feel creative and emotional while in a hungover state, so I've made a lot of music in days after parties. Otherwise it is anytime at home.
How often do you work at it (ie. twice a week)?
A couple of times a week.
What inspires you to create?
Random synaptic bursts in my head.
What are your major distractions to creating?
TV and video games.

Different times for different types.
I find I play better during the afternoon, before dinner.
I find late evening better for mixing and processing. |

What time of day do you create music usually?
-From evening to early morning. I always do my tracks in one go.
How often do you work at it (ie. twice a week)?
Every day of the week.
What inspires you to create?
My older tracks. My gear. Feelings..
What are your major distractions to creating?
Well i have no internet connection to the computer i use for sequencing, and i can't hear my phone with my headphones on. So i guess there are no major distractions! |

| usually late evening to early morning as well, although I'm more sporadic when it actually comes to working on stuff... there are times I'll go a couple of months without working on anything at all. |

usually my creativity comes after a week of 15 hour days at school right as my head finally hits the pillow and I don't feel like getting up to write anything down or pick up a guitar... That or at the tail end of a 25 hour acid trip when all life has been sucked from your soul and again you don't feel like hitting record...
I think Dali referred to this as the Paranoiac Critical Method... I call it a temporary glimpse into the mind of a schizophrenic... |

Typical day: I start at 6:30 AM and work till 11 or 12 AM with brief interruptions for chores. Lunch and more chores till 2:00 or 3:00 then back to work till 4:30 or 5:00 then stop till 7:00PM and back to work till some time between 8:00 and 10:00.
| diatonis wrote: | | How often do you work at it (ie. twice a week)? |
Generally almost every day though I do 8+ hours only four or five days our of seven. But there are periods when chores/projects take up most days for a week or two at a time.

Whenever I can get a few hours completely free and alone. I've made pieces in an hour before work before, but I prefer to have an evening. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/caregivergiver |

What time of day do you create music usually?
Normally evenings between 7pm and 11pm.
How often do you work at it (ie. twice a week)?
When I am engaged in a project, I work every evening and weekends.
What inspires you to create?
I feel as though I am driven to create. I want to create whether I am inspired or not. My own personal goals for the quantity/quality of output drive me to produce.
What are your major distractions to creating?
I often feel exhausted. The couch is a big distraction. Email and computer is a distraction (for example, I am creating this post rather than creating music )
I do not consider myself to be an "energetic" person. I do a lot of things and I always manage to have enough "energy" to get things done. However, when I sit in a chair, regardless of the time of day, I will be asleep within minutes.
Reading documents at work (I am a systems programmer/tech specialist) is difficult. Often I stand up to read them because to sit at my desk is to fall asleep at my desk.
Whenever I finish a recording (that is, mixed-down and released) there is a kind of "let down" afterwards... sometimes I can't create for a few days afterwards.
People with real hardship manage to create. Thus, I won't let a little fatigue and lack of inspiration stop me from creating.
OK OK... so much for my self-indulgent rant. Time to hit <submit> and DO SOMETHING! |

This is an interesting question and I've been thinking about it, trying for a less tongue in cheek answer. For me inspiration seems to relate to individual works, i.e. it varies from work to work. If I think of motivation as the more general term, introspection reveals that it has changed over time and is now reduced to boredom avoidance. I really can't stand being bored so this is a strong motivator.
BTW if low energy is not the result of illness (like an inflammatory disease, etc.) I would recommend caffeine. I know it has been implicated in health problems but as far as I know these are not conclusive and a recent study showed that caffein intake is associated with a 30% reduction in the risk of type II diabetes. Anyway, it works for me. _________________ The question is not whether they can talk or reason, but whether they can suffer. -- Jeremy Bentham |

Who was it who said "A mathematician is a machine for turning coffee into theorems?" I heard it from Paul Erdös first but the TV show Numbers attributed it to someone else.
Same could be true for music. Coffee goes in, music comes out.

It varies quite a lot actually - sometimes I work late at night, but usually only when I'm trying to finish something off that I've been working on all day. Usually I just want to sleep. Bored, empty afternoons are usually my most productive periods.
| Quote: | | How often do you work at it (ie. twice a week)? |
Yeah, two to three times a week, although it varies. I've just come out of a month of inactivity - busy times at work - but now I'm on Christmas break, I'm playing music every day.
| Quote: | | What inspires you to create? |
Just an idea. An idea for a sound - "I wonder if I can make something that sounds like that?" And so I get to work. Sometimes it's a melody, often it's hearing another artist and wanting to see if I can capture the essence of their music, but usually it's just an idea for a sound that comes out of nowhere.
