| Quote: | Zidane will remember this night for as long as he lives. France had promised to repeat their success of 1998 for their retiring captain and only he will know what possessed him when he thrust his forehead into the chest of Marco Materazzi. Zidane had to go, accompanied down the tunnel by the glare of thousands and thousands of flash bulbs and the tears of the legions of French supporters.

And understand one thing, for us FRENCH people,Zidane IS NOT A GREAT CHAMPION, IS A GREAT MAN. |

But please leave Zidane alone, check who has been elected the BEST PLAYER of this world cup 2006, and talk to me about Marco Materazzi instead. |

Hey, it is only a game. Congrats to all of the teams.
I watched the semi-finals and the final game on TV. That's my dose of soccer for the year.
Maybe someone could explain what offsides is. I didn't understand why that goal was disallowed.
Also, another question. On US TV, U2 was featured big as the opening act for the show. Is there something special with U2 and soccer, or was that just a big advertisement? _________________ --Howard

Nobody knows what "offsides" is. Well, I've heard a thousand different versions. I believe it has something to do with this scenerio:
If a player is racing towards the goal with the ball and there is no one from his team between himself and the goalie, he is considered "offsides." That was the last explanation I got. I guess it might be true, since it doesn't seem too fair to have a one-on-one with the goalie, except with penalty shots for a tie-breaker. For normal penalty shots, you at least get the defense to have a wall of players protecting their twig and berries in front of their goalie. |

I am quite sure he said something nasty to Zidane but you'll agree with me that Zidane's reaction wasn't a very smart move. he was kicked out of the game leaving his team without the best player, but anyway I won't start a flame war about a soccer game. _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

I hope you enjoyed the show.
Offside means, you cannot camp on the opponent side if there is no opponent player between you and the opponent goal keeper, if someone of your own team give you the ball at this precise moment, YOU ARE OFFSIDE. With some exceptions, see Jan' link

Thanks for the explaination. Seems like it would stop fast breaks. I'd suggest getting rid of that rule. It would be more exciting if there were more goals scored, IMHO. Maybe they should eliminate the goalie position. Those guys just stop all the fun. _________________ --Howard

And maybe they can switch it up in the second half so that everyone can use their hands, but no feet. Although, what would the equivalent of the slide tackle be then? |

no, of course, because the most beautiful city in the world is only in the eye of the beholder but I should say yes because without tourists it would be a dead city _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

I read that the song "Coup De Boule" inspired by Zidane is getting a lot of airplay in France. I have only found it here but my knowledge of the French language is too limited to understand the lyrics. _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube
