Today is Pi Day!

This wonderful constant, a clear favourite of mine, and probably the overall most important one in modern civilzation, is also the one that is most helpful in the mathematical aspects of sound and synthesis.

All hail Pi!

party! party time! party!

Tried to watch the video, especially because YouTube says they've rolled out automatic captions for everything. Didn't see it. YouTube fail, or did I fail?

The captions menu for this video says "Captions not available". From what I've read it's only available on a few videos, which is a bit strange if it's a system that automatically generates captions from the speech.

That's what I'm saying! YouTube said "Hey, we're going to do this for everyone now!"

A grad student who took a class with me a year ago sent an email yesterday, asking whether I knew of an efficient way to to calculate

2 raised to the (2 raised to the 22nd).

I started out by writing, "Can't think of anything off the top of my head," and then wrote

1 << (1 << 22)

which is the Python expression for doing it. Nothing savant about it -- the math professor he asked first doesn't dream in binary -- not sure whether he asked because it was PI day.

Converting *that* to a decimal string efficiently is a bit more of a challenge. Maybe a savant could do it!

1 times 0 equals 2 times 0, therefore 1 equals 2.
